Australia's History

Australian "Terra Australis", the Latin words from which the name Australia is derived means "southern land".

History began for Australian people some 40,000 years ago, as the first aboriginal people moved onto the Continent. They brought with them a unique respect for the Australian landscape, its wildlife, and its extremes.

Today, the Commonwealth of Australia is a wealthy, multicultural nation, which routinely wins top awards for its standard and quality of living.

Australia - Since the early 1600s

Everything about Australia is extreme; a huge mass of land largely separated from Asia to the North, its natural landforms and history are its own. From dry deserts in the central territories to the tropical rainforest in Queensland, Australia is a beautiful and variant continent. Some of the most beautiful and most poisonous of animals inhabit the continent, with an entire animal kingdom - the marsupials - dominating the fauna.

European settlement began in late 1600s, as Dutch mariners plodded their trade off Tasmania; they began building small townships to resupply their ships. Around 1770, the British made claim to the Continent, and as the Dutch were in no financial situation to argue, their land rights were swiftly done away with.

The British regarded Australia as a place to send criminals , and established a series of penal colonies their in order to support forced emigration to the Australian continent. Settlement was primarily concentrated on the South Eastern Coast, where the majority of Australians still live. It was here that a favorable climate allowed for cities to grow in what were then terms "Crown Colonies" by the British governance.

Commonwealth of Australia

With the power of the British Empire waning, it became important for the Australian people to define themselves as a nation within the British Empire, able to defend itself and even more importantly, govern itself. Finally, in 1901, Australia became a federation. This new federation was called the "Commonwealth of Australia", and today (after more than a century) it is still known by this name.

Australia, since then, has contributed greatly to world culture, through its art, music, and historic legacy. Australia remains a key player in the so-called Anglo sphere, with alliances and official engagement spanning the entire world, with almost every nation of the world included. Prosperous, Australia has been able to define a parallel but separate diplomatic line than its English-speaking brethren.

An "Australian"

In recent years, the idea of what an "Australian" actually is, has started to be redefined. Through massive immigration from the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the Middle East, Australians today hail from thousands of different backgrounds. The Australian people although living on the same continent can have different cultures and different customs.

Australia - terra australis - the southern land, remains a compelling nation in the history of the world. Separated from the rest of the world, and yet very much a part of it. Australia has been able to define its own place in the world as a unique and interesting destination for millions of travelers and immigrants each year and for its Australian citizens .
